The Brotherhood
Born to the Brotherhood and raised in its fortress, Altaïr was Masyaf's prodigy and its cautionary tale in one body: the finest blade of his generation, ruined for a season by the pride that came with it. The disaster at Solomon's Temple in 1191 stripped him to novice; the nine lives Al Mualim demanded as penance became, target by dying target, an education in doubt. What made him the Creed's true founder was not the killing but the writing — the Codex in which he interrogated every tenet he had inherited, turned the Apple of Eden into a subject of study rather than worship, and remade a warrior sect into a philosophy that could cross oceans and centuries.
