History's Mary Read sailed the Caribbean disguised as a man; the series makes her disguise a doubled one — 'James Kidd,' pirate, was also Mary Read, Assassin of Ah Tabai's Caribbean bureau. She spent Black Flag playing long-game recruiter to Edward Kenway, needling the profiteer about the man underneath, showing him the Creed sideways until he was ready to hear it straight. She is the moral hinge of Nassau's story: proof that freedom without purpose is just appetite, delivered by someone who had claimed more freedom than anyone aboard.
